NEW STUDENT TECH GUIDE

NEW STUDENT TECHNOLOGY GUIDE TOP 10

Coming to campus for the first time is an exciting experience and we want to make sure you have all the tech you'll need to be successful. The following items are the top ten things we want to share with you when it comes to campus technology.

1) ESU PROVIDES MICROSOFT OFFICE FOR FREE TO ALL CURRENT STUDENTS

You can download it on up to 5 devices and also use the web browser versions. No registering, no payment. Just get it right here from TechSite.

Need help installing? Follow our step-by-step instruction guide for Microsoft Office

2) YOU WILL NEED A LAPTOP WITH WINDOWS OR MACOS (NO CHROMEBOOKS)

This is our recommendation based on the software we provide and the experiences with some things simply not working on Chromebooks. Get a Windows 11 laptop or a MacBook capable of running the latest version of MacOS. You'll want to ensure it has a webcam and is WiFi-enabled. We have wireless internet coverage in most buildings and many outdoor locations. Also, as a college student, you have access to student discounts from many vendors. Check out our "Buying a New Computer" page for a few of our recommendations!

3) BRING A SMARTPHONE

We know most students will have an iPhone or Android smartphone already, but you will want a device with cellular service to connect with email, social media, emergency alerts and custom mobile apps (including our own ESU app)!

4) WE PROVIDE EMAIL AND FILE STORAGE

Current ESU students are given a Gmail account and file storage. Be aware that you are limited to 100 GB of space (that's for everything in Google). We also provide each student with 1 TB (that's 1,000 GB) of storage via Microsoft OneDrive. All are available right here from Hornet 365.

5) CHECK YOUR EMAIL!

Okay, this one sounds like it should be a given, but we encourage students to check their ESU Gmail every day! This is the #1 official communication channel between ESU and you! Now that you're a student, all of your financial aid, academics, billing info and more will be sent to this account!

6) STAY ENGAGED!

IT partners with the Center for Student Involvement, Associated Student Government and Fraternity and Sorority Life to bring you Hornet Central--a one-stop shop for all things student organization related. Tell us what you like to do, and we'll connect you with that student organization! We have over 100 active organizations on campus!

7) IT'S REALLY HAPPENING AT ESU!

There's always something going on and we get the word out through our Hornet+ services! Hornet TVs are found in most buildings on campus and online! Hornet Announcements is a daily news blast emailed to you every weekday afternoon! Hornet Calendar shows all of the events and activities going on at any given time. And Hornet Events Weekly is a short digest of don't miss events over the next week--emailed to you each Wednesday morning. Check your email and Hornet 365 for the latest!

8) WE'RE HERE TO HELP!

Any time you need help with tech (or anything else on campus), please contact us at the IT Help Desk. We offer phone, email, walk-in and chat support. If we can't help you, we'll make sure you know who can! Our hours are updated online, and our office is located on the first floor of Cremer Hall, Room 149.

9) PRINT FROM ANYWHERE

ESU provides its students with $8 worth of free prints each semester from our student printing service called SkyPrint. You can submit your print jobs from select lab computers on campus or from the SkyPrint website on Hornet 365. Each black and white print is $.08 per page and each color print is $.32 per page. And you can save by printing on both sides of the sheet. Submit your print job and release it from one of our convenient release stations when you come to campus!

10) START HERE

You should be able to get to most ESU services from one single site--our portal, Hornet 365. Go to hornet365.com and you can choose your role (i.e. "Student") to see links to all of the many digital services available to you as a student. You can also find help with resetting your password or updating your info (like address or name)!
