This includes the use of names other than your legal name to identify yourself, regardless of whether you have legally changed your name. The university encourages self-expression and affirmation of identity.
Students, faculty, and staff may use names other than your legal first name to identify yourself, regardless of whether you have legally changed your name.
Chosen first names will be included in many common display locations, such as Email “Display Name”, Class Rosters, Grade Rosters, and Hornet Cards. Because this can be dependent on the information system used for that function or process, the full list is subject to change.

The chosen first name may be recorded in the University ERP system (Ellucian Banner) by selecting button identified on this page. Please be advised that because we use your legal name in the administrative computer, sometimes the legal name appears in an unexpected context. If it does and you would like it not to, please reach out to the Registrar to work through the process of changing which name is used in these contexts. Students who have questions about the steps required in Banner to change to their chosen name and/or personal pronouns may contact the Office of the University Registrar. Employees with questions regarding these steps can contact Human Resources.
The university allows students faculty, and staff to identify a chosen first name and personal pronouns. The legal last name (surname) will remain unchanged and will be included with the chosen first name as described above. Chosen first names are limited to alphabetical characters, diacritical marks and spaces. The chosen first name must be an allowable format. Examples of allowable formats of chosen first name include, but are not limited to:
· A middle name instead of first name
· An abbreviated name (Rob instead of Robert)
· First and middle initials (A.J. instead of Andrew John)
· A name to which you are in the process of legally changing
· A name that better represents your gender identity
· An anglicized name
Students faculty, and staff may not use a chosen first name for misrepresentation or for illegal purposes. Emporia State University reserves the right to reject chosen name requests that are offensive, obscene or that use derogatory language. Students faculty, and staff are cautioned regarding using chosen names that could be considered self-aggrandizing or nonsensical.
Chosen name changes are limited to one per academic year. Exceptions to the policy (or to this limit) may be approved by the University Registrar for students, and Human Resources for faculty and staff.
Emporia State continues to work toward the inclusion of Pronouns in our Student Information System and auxiliary systems.
