MAINTAINING STATUS

Registration -

You must register with the OIE at the beginning of every semester. This should be done by the second or third day of class. The process has two steps. The first step is to complete the Returning Student Check-In request at emporia-isss.terradotta.com. The second step is to visit the office in person with your Hornet ID card. If you fail to register at the start of every semester, your SEVIS record will be terminated, and you will have to leave the country. Only students that are graduating during the summer must register for the summer semester. 

 

Enrollment Requirements -
You must maintain full-time enrollment during the fall and spring semesters.  If you fail to maintain full-time enrollment, your SEVIS record will be terminated, and you will have to depart from the US. 


Summer semesters are optional unless it is your final semester. 


Undergraduate Students -

  • Must enroll in a minimum of 12 credits 
  • 9 credits must be in face-to-face courses; only 1 online class or up to 3 credits can count toward the minimum 

 

Intensive English Students -

  • Must enroll in a minimum of 12 credits in face-to-face courses 
  • No online courses permitted toward the minimum 

 

Graduate Students -

  • Must enroll in a minimum of 9 credits 
  • 6 credits must be face-to-face courses; only 1 online class or up to 3 credits can count toward the minimum 

 

Graduate Assistants - 

  • Must enroll in a minimum of 6 credits 
  • 3 credits must be in face-to-face courses; only 1 online class or up to 3 credits can count toward the minimum 

 

Reduced Course Load -

You can request a Reduced Course Load from the OIE under certain circumstances, such as: difficulty in your first semester, illness or medical condition, or your final semester. If it is your final semester, you must still take at least one in person course. 

 

Academic Progress -

F-1 students must maintain good academic progress toward their degree. This includes attending classes and attaining passing grades. You must complete your program by the Program End Date on your I-20. Program extensions cannot be given for failure of classes. 

 

J-1 students must attend class. 

 

Academic concerns such as poor attendance and failing grades are reported to OIE staff by faculty and academic advisors. 

 

Employment -

International students have restrictions on employment, including internships – paid or unpaid. Please visit the Employment pages to learn more. Failure to follow employment rules will result in the termination of your SEVIS record, and you will have to depart from the US.
